Our quest for a good local gym continues. Today we stopped by the Lacey Athletic Club which just opened. It was disappointing to say the least.

As soon as we walked in we noticed that all the cardio equipment was by one company, Star Trac. Neither of us are huge fans of the Star Trac cardio line; they just don't fit us all that well. At our last gym, no one ever rode the star-trac bikes because of their bad fit.

As we continued on our tour, we discovered that ALL the equipment in the club was made by that one company. That was one of the things that I hated most about our last gym, which was all Nautilus brands, but at least they had some variety in the cardio.

While you may be able to get a great deal by buying all your equipment at one place, you are not thinking of your customer's needs when you do that. You may end up paying more to get a good variety, but in the long run your customers will be happier if you get the best of each type of equipment.

I would much rather join a gym that bought a good variety of individually selected used equipment, over one that just goes to one of these manufacturers and just orders some sort of "gym kit". It may be an appealing image to novices, but it is just plain disappointing to those of us with some experience.

Update: We did pick up one day passes to try out the club anyway. I'm not real impressed with a club that will only give you one day to try them out, but since I've already pretty much written off this club, it isn't worth worrying about.

So we decided to at least give them a try, but when we called to get their hours, we find out that they close at 10 PM on weekdays and at something like 6 PM on weekends.

This club might work out for some people, but it's completely off my list now.

UPDATE 2: A reader has informed me that the club is now open 24 hours on weekdays, and till 10 on weekends.

I have recently come to agree with Dave RE: not liking startrack equipment. I am doing a weights program, and I am supposed to be able to inrease my load (when I am strong enough) by 5 pound increments. The startrack machines don't allow this....for example, it will randomly jump from 60 lbs, all the way up to 75 lbs. That seems a little ridiculous to me. When I asked the gym owner, who happend to be working the counter the day I ran into this problem, he gave the lamest suggestion. He told me to take a 5 lb disc weight (like what you would put on a barbell), and just hang it off the machine, using the pin. Ok, it sort of works, but not on all the machines due to the fact that the weight stacks are surrounded by a plastic housing or cover, and it often prevents you from doing this because the pin isn't long enough to engage the weight stack with the extra thickness of the disk weight between it. Also, on other machines that do allow you to try this, it often makes noise, because it rubs all the way up and down, and others, such as on the cable gym set-up, it hangs precariously from all the movement, and you have to stop and re-adjust so it doesn't fall out.
Aside from all this, I do love their les mills workout classes. I am not skinny enough to get in a swim-suit right now anyway, so I probably will stay at lacey athletic for a while, before I check out LA fitness. The only draw there for me would be the pool and sauna.

Good review

I'm looking for a new gym and happened upon this post. Have you found a good gym? LA Fitness also only has Star Trac, and I just checked out Bally Total Fitness and their gym is old and rotted, but their equipment did have a variety.

What's wrong with Star Trac?

I've signed up with LA Fitness

I did finally sign up with LA Fitness instead. The new generation of Star Trac seems to have fixed up a lot of my complaints, the recumbent bikes fit better and the treadmills have a springy bed instead of being solid like their old ones.

LA Fitness isn't open 24 hours, which is my biggest complaint, but it does have a pool and spa. They don't have any sort of duration on their contract, so if I didn't like it I could drop it and only be out $100. It also has a pool and spa, which is a big plus to me.

Avoid Bally's like the plague. I had a membership with them when I lived in Colorado Springs, and when I moved someplace without a club, they screwed me over about trying to cancel their contract. Ask around and you'll hear other horror stories.

lacey workouts, bootcamp, classes

I love lacey athletic club!! its the place for me and a great place to meet nice people and have a good time!

........Still love Lacey

........Still love Lacey Athletics? U just have to love the way they close the doors and went out of business without any notice.

Not surprised

Unfortunately, that is pretty much par for the course when it comes to gym closures. Many of them even go into overdrive trying to sell new memberships right before they close up shop.

THEY STILL MIGHT HAVE CHARGED YOU...EVEN IF YOUR MEMBERSHIP EXPIRED.
