Do anti-SUV people ever think?
Why the hell do people complain about SUVs without even taking a couple of minutes to consider that many of them, possibly even a majority of them, are used properly and in a way that higher mileage cars simply will not be able to replace.
Okay, there are some really good reasons to complain about the way that certain people use their SUVs. If all you do is drive it around town with one person in it 98% of the time, then you are being incredibly wasteful.
But the fact is that they were designed for a specific purpose, and when used for that purpose, they can be far more efficient than any Prius, and when you get outside the confines of the city, they tend to be used for those purposes a lot more often.
A Suburban can carry 9 people and their stuff comfortably, or it can carry a lot of stuff. A fully loaded SUV would almost certainly compare favorably to a fully loaded compact car on a load pound basis or on a comfortable passenger basis.
Then there is the possiblity that you might want to take that vehicle off pavement. While most cars can handle dirt roads, you will find yourself getting work done on them a lot more often than with SUVs, and you just can't take them seriously off the beaten path. Even desert "roads" without rocks or potholes will high center most cars.
And of course, there is the towing capacity. Boat owners, horse owners, landowners, construction workers and such have to consider how they are going to move that heavy load around. Of course, they could choose a pickup truck which would meet the towing and load hauling needs, and keep them from the scorn of the crowd, while not actually saving any fuel, but that really isn't such a great plan if they actually have reason to bring more than a couple other people with them while towing.
So, instead of being Anti-SUV, How about being Pro-Conservation instead. Instead of saying that driving an SUV is bad, say that there are more appropriate and much less expensive options for many uses.
